Walk-In Showers

What Does a Walk-In Shower Installation Involve?

A walk-in shower replaces your existing tub or shower with a low-threshold Harbor Series base, floor-to-ceiling wall panels in the colour you pick, new valve and fixture trim, and a grab bar package anchored into blocking behind the wall. Everything standard is stocked, so installation starts three to five days from the date of sale and the work itself is a single day.

What It Is, and Who It Suits

A walk-in shower is one you step into rather than climb into. The old tub or dated enclosure comes out, a low-threshold base goes in, and the walls are re-covered in large panels — not tile. We do not install tile in showers, deliberately: no grout means nothing to scrub, nothing to crack and nothing porous for water to get behind.

It tends to suit three households. Someone who stopped using the tub years ago and wants the floor space back. Someone who can still manage the step over the tub wall but would rather not be doing it in five years. And anyone whose enclosure has started staining, leaking or coming apart at the seams.

If bathing is the point rather than showering, a walk-in tub is the better fit. If the tub is staying in an alcove and you want a shower in its place, that is a tub-to-shower conversion — same day, same crew, different starting point.

What Is Included as Standard

Not a starting package with the useful parts sold separately. This is what goes into a standard walk-in shower.

  • A Harbor Series base — one piece, textured, with no grout lines
  • Stocked sizes from 60 × 30 through 60 × 36
  • Wall sheets 4 ft × 9 ft, floor to ceiling — no horizontal seam, one barely-visible vertical seam on the back wall
  • Your choice of any of the 14 in-stock wall colours
  • New valve and fixture trim in brushed nickel or matte black
  • A grab bar safety package: three knurled bars, anchored into blocking set behind the wall at the design visit
  • GE Supreme Silicone Kitchen & Bath at every joint — 100% silicone, neutral cure, ASTM C920, water-ready in 30 minutes
  • Your door choice fitted, or no door if you would rather go without

The old shower, the debris and the packaging leave with us. Floors are covered before anything comes out.

The Choices You Make

Decided with you at the design visit, in your own bathroom, with the wall in front of you.

  • Wall colour

Fourteen colours, all in stock, restocked in a day. Champagne Veil, Ocean Sapphire, Midnight Sapphire, Champagne Mist, Silver Summit and nine more.

  • Fixture finish

Brushed nickel or matte black, both stocked. Champagne bronze is a special order rather than a stocked finish — see the timeline below.

  • The fixture itself

A showerhead, a rain head, or a rain head with a handheld on a slide bar. The handheld is the one most people end up glad of.

  • A niche

A recess set into the wall for bottles. Where it goes and how big it is are settled at the design visit, because it has to land between the studs.

  • Shelves

Corner shelves fixed to the panel instead of, or as well as, a recessed niche. Quicker, and they do not need to line up with framing.

  • Grab bars

Three knurled bars in your chosen finish. You decide where they go; we set blocking behind the wall at the design visit so they anchor into timber rather than into board.

Pick the colours and the hardware before anything is ordered

Fourteen wall colours, two stocked fixture finishes, three fixture types and three door options. It is worth looking through before the design visit so you arrive with a shortlist.

Design Your Shower — colours, finishes, fixtures and doors

The door: three options, and none of them costs you the others

This is a real choice, not a ladder. Tell us which you want and that is what gets fitted.

  • Semi-frameless bypass sliding doors

The stocked option. Two panels that slide past each other on a track, in the same finishes as your fixtures. Nothing to order in, so it does not move your start date.

  • A custom glass enclosure

For openings a stock door will not suit — an unusual width, a corner entry, a fixed panel and a swinging door. Measured for your bathroom and ordered to those measurements.

  • No door at all

Doorless, if that is what you want. A wider opening to walk through, a longer wall run, and no track or glass to clean. Plenty of homeowners choose this on purpose.

Which one suits your bathroom depends on the opening, where the shower head points and how much of the room you want to keep open. We work that out with you at the design visit — and if you want to read up on the glass itself first, we wrote about shower door glass here.

How Long It Takes

01

Three to five days from the date of sale

That is the wait until we arrive. It is not a schedule of work and it is not how long the job takes. Sign on Monday, and we are in your bathroom by Thursday or Friday.

02

A single day to install

A standard stocked walk-in shower is a one-day installation. You lose the bathroom for the day, not for a fortnight.

03

Champagne bronze runs to seven days

Champagne bronze fixtures and doors are a special order, not stocked. That pushes the start out to seven days. Seven is a ceiling, not a starting point.

The reason is inventory. We carry the panels, the bases, the doors and the fixtures, so the wait is scheduling rather than manufacturing. If you want the long version of why that is unusual, read why a bathroom remodel takes months when the work takes days.
